Baby Skin Care 101

Do Babies Need a Skin Care Routine?

A baby’s skin is always soft and smells like heaven till the time it isn’t, and it doesn’t. The skin of a newborn is just as delicate as the rest of them, it’s because of this that a baby-friendly skincare routine is the only way to ensure that you are taking the best care of your baby’s skin.

The Bath Time Mistakes

Let’s start with bath time, babies make plenty of mess throughout the day, still, they do not need long and luxurious baths every day. Generally, they need just a couple of baths a week to make sure that their sensitive skin doesn’t dry out and the necessary oils aren’t removed due to excessive bathing.

For bathing, make sure to curate the products that are being used for the baby. It’s essential to use gentle baby products that are explicitly formulated for them. Usually, these are produced without the use of harmful chemicals, deodorants, dyes, and other toxic chemicals. Using a shampoo that has a tear-free formula is also important. While bathing, make sure that all those nooks and crannies are cleaned as some babies have more folds than others.

All babies have delicate areas and cleaning/drying them before moisturizing is essential. Also, focus on DRYING not DRYING OUT the skin, DO NOT put a diaper on a wet bottom as rashes are the baby’s worst enemy. When you are getting the bottom diaper-ready, you may skip the powder as baby powders are not good for the lungs of the baby. Water barriers like Vaseline can be applied.

Now coming to the lotion, the skin of a baby can easily dry out so lathering a gentle moisturizer helps to prevent a dry, flaky skin and even eczema. You may re-apply the gentle moisturizer throughout the day especially if the home environment is already dry. You may also add a cool-mist humidifier to the bedroom.

The Most Important Bit

The most important bit in a baby’s skincare routine is to keep the baby’s skin hydrated and avoiding any irritants. Babies always do get a host of weird rashes, bumps, flaking, however, most newborn skin issues are nothing to be concerned about as they are always a part of the journey.
