Regardless of how good your overall skincare routine is, it’s very important to be sure that you are doing the basics right. One such basic is knowing how to wash your face! What’s The Correct Way to Wash Your Face?
There is no “one size fits all” policy to this! There are various aspects that need to be factored in before giving an answer to this. Some of these factors are:
- Your skin complexion
- Where you live
- What all activities do you do during the day
- What skin problems do you commonly experience
- How oily or dry your skin is
Regardless of these factors being considered to find that “correct technique” that suits your case, there are several incorrect ways to wash your face that apply to everyone universally! These are:
- Not washing your face at least twice a day.
- Using cleansers with irritants
- Not exfoliating
- Not picking the correct cleaner for your skin type.
- Not picking the correct water temperature
How To Finalize the Correct Face Washing Technique?
There are several steps to this, let’s begin with the first one which is picking the right cleanser for your skin type.
Step 1: Picking the Right Cleanser
When it comes to skincare and cleansers there might be a specific cleanser that suits your skin type and there might be one that works well for others but irritates your skin. Knowing what works for you and what doesn’t is literally half battle won.
For Oily & Acne Prone Skin: This skin type usually needs a cleaner that can lift dirt and oil off skin with a foaming agent. At the same time, the foaming agent shouldn’t be too harsh for your skin. Apart from this, oily and acne-prone skin can also benefit from the second round of skin-toning/cleansing steps to remove residual oil and debris.
Normal, Dry, or Sensitive Skin: Normal or sensitive skin might or might not need a strong foaming cleanser. It’s something that you really must try and test for yourself. You may also consult with your Dermatologist for some recommendations as their clinical experience always helps!
Apart from all this, always be sure to avoid cleansers with needless irritants. A lot of cleansers on the market are loaded with fragrance or extra ingredients to give them an “all in one” vibe in skincare. What these extra ingredients do at times is irritate your skin and cause reactions such as rashes. Always be sure to get the core of the ingredient right rather than going for one type of product that claims to cover multiple aspects!
Step 2: Using the Right Water Temperature
When you are washing the dishes, cold water is never as effective at removing oil as warm water. This is also why, if you have always been washing your face with extremely warm water then you have been damaging your skin over time. Warm water often works in a harsh way on the skin and removes too much natural oil (in case of dry skin).
How to Know the Right Temperature for my Skin Type?
In case your skin feels tight and dry after washing your face then you should be switching to a cooler water temperature. While in case your skin feels oily after a face wash then you should be switching to warmer water temperature.
Step 3: Exfoliating, But not too much!

Step 4: Washing Your Face TWICE a day!
Regardless of how good your skincare routine is, even the perfect face wash doesn’t have effects that last more than 12hrs usually. So, it’s important to fully cleanse and remove what has built up over the last 12 hours before you apply something else on your skin.
So that is about it, cleaning your face isn’t that simple of a task after all!
